Who Are the Mananambal?

Mananambal are Siquijor's traditional folk healers who have practiced herbal medicine and spiritual healing for generations. The word comes from the Visayan "tambal" meaning medicine or cure.

These healers are respected members of their communities, often learning their craft from parents or grandparents.

Healing Practices

Bolo-Bolo

A diagnostic and healing ritual using a glass of water, a stone, and a straw. The healer blows into the water to identify and extract illness.

Herbal Medicine

Mananambal use local plants and herbs for various ailments. Many of these remedies have been used for centuries.

Hilot (Massage)

Traditional massage techniques passed down through generations, often combined with herbal oils.

The Healing Festival

Every Holy Week (Black Saturday), healers from across the island gather to prepare their medicines and share knowledge. This is when many visitors seek out healing experiences.

Visiting a Healer

If you wish to visit a mananambal:

  • Ask locals for recommendations - not all healers accept visitors
  • Go with an open mind and respect
  • Bring a small gift or donation
  • Don't treat it as entertainment - this is their livelihood and belief

Responsible Tourism

The healing traditions of Siquijor are living culture, not tourist attractions. When visiting:

  • Be respectful and humble
  • Ask permission before taking photos
  • Don't bargain or negotiate fees
  • Share your experience thoughtfully, not sensationally
