The Island of Fire

Siquijor's oldest name is "Isla del Fuego" - Island of Fire. Spanish sailors approaching at night reported seeing the island glowing with mysterious lights.

The explanation? Most likely bioluminescent organisms in the water and swarms of fireflies on land. But the mystical reputation stuck.

Supernatural Stories

Aswang & Mangkukulam

Siquijor is famous (or infamous) for stories of witchcraft and supernatural beings. While locals often laugh at these tales, they're part of the island's identity.

The Balete Tree

The century-old balete tree is said to be home to engkanto (nature spirits) and kapre (giant tree spirits). Locals leave offerings at its base.

Reality vs. Myth

Modern Siquijornons have a complex relationship with their island's reputation. Many embrace it as part of their heritage, while others tire of being associated with witchcraft.

The truth? Siquijor is a beautiful, peaceful island with warm, welcoming people. The "scary" reputation often brings curious visitors - and the locals have learned to smile about it.
